1. About This Privacy Policy
US Tax Desk ("we", "us", "our") is committed to respecting and protecting your privacy. This privacy policy applies to our website at us-taxdesk.com, our email newsletter, and any other service that references or links to it (each, a "Service").
US Tax Desk is operated by an individual sole trader established in the United Kingdom, who is the controller of the personal information provided to, or collected by or for, the Service. Because we are established in the United Kingdom, this policy is framed around the UK GDPR and the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR). Where readers are located in the European Economic Area, the EU GDPR applies to that processing on equivalent terms.
We are a small independent publication. We do not sell personal information, we do not operate advertising on the Service, and we do not build behavioural profiles of our readers.
2. Information We Collect
We collect information about you in two ways: directly from your input, and through automated technologies when you use the Service. We do not purchase personal information, and we do not obtain it from data brokers or third-party enrichment providers.

The types of personal information we collect directly from you depend on how you interact with us, and may include:
- Contact details, being the email address you enter when subscribing to our newsletter; and/or
- Comments, questions and other information you choose to send us by email.
The Service does not offer user accounts, and we do not collect login credentials, payment card details, postal addresses, telephone numbers, or special category data such as information about health, race, religion or political opinions.
2.2 Data from Service Use, Including Cookies
The Service may automatically collect information about how you and your device interact with it, including:
- Computer, device and connection information, such as IP address, browser type and version, and operating system;
- Usage data, such as the pages you viewed, the referring page, and date and time stamps; and/or
- Approximate location derived from your IP address, at country or city level only.
We collect this data through our hosting provider's servers and through the use of cookies and similar technologies. Cookies are small text files that can be read by a web server in the domain that placed the cookie on your device.
Analytics cookies are not set unless you agree. On your first visit, a banner asks for your choice, and analytics storage remains denied until you accept. If you decline, or ignore the banner, no analytics cookies are placed. You can change your choice at any time β see section 10. 2.3 Data Collected for Security
Our newsletter subscription form is protected by Google reCAPTCHA, which helps us distinguish genuine subscribers from automated bots. reCAPTCHA collects information including your IP address and interaction data and transmits it to Google. Google's handling of that data is governed by the Google Privacy Policy. Please note that reCAPTCHA loads when the page loads, rather than only when you use the form.
3. How We Use Your Information
Depending on how you interact with us and the Service, we use your personal information to:
- Deliver the Service to you and keep it working, safe and secure;
- Send you the email newsletter you subscribed to;
- Respond to your requests, enquiries, comments and concerns;
- Understand which articles are read and how readers find the Service, so we can improve what we publish;
- Detect, investigate and help prevent security, fraud and technical issues, including automated abuse of our subscription form; and/or
- Comply with our legal obligations and enforce our terms.
We do not use your information to deliver targeted advertising, and we do not pass it to sponsors or other organisations for their own marketing.
4. Sharing of Your Information
4.1 Our Service Providers
We share information with a small number of service providers who process it on our behalf, on our instructions, and in compliance with this privacy policy and appropriate confidentiality and security measures:

4.2 For Legal Reasons
We will also disclose your personal information if we have a good faith belief that such disclosure is necessary to:

- detect, investigate and help prevent security, fraud or technical issues; and/or
- protect the rights, property or safety of US Tax Desk, our readers or others.
4.3 What We Do Not Do
We do not sell or rent personal information. We do not share it with sponsors, joint venture entities, advertising networks or data brokers. We do not operate social media tracking pixels on the Service.
5. Grounds for Processing
When we collect or otherwise process any personal information within the scope of applicable data protection laws, we do so:
- With your consent, for analytics cookies and for sending you the email newsletter. Where we rely on consent, you have the right to withdraw it at any time;
- Where necessary for our legitimate interests, in operating a functioning and secure website, protecting the Service and our subscriber list from automated abuse, and responding to enquiries you send us β except where those interests are overridden by your privacy rights. You may object to processing carried out on this basis; and/or
- Where necessary for compliance with applicable law or another legal obligation.
6. Data Retention
We retain your personal information for as long as necessary for the purposes described in this policy, or for other essential purposes such as complying with our legal obligations, resolving disputes, maintaining security and preventing abuse. In practice:
- Newsletter email addresses are retained until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete them;
- Analytics data is retained in Google Analytics for no longer than 14 months;
- Server logs are retained by our hosting provider for a short period for security and troubleshooting; and
- Correspondence is kept only as long as needed to deal with your query and any follow-up.
7. Locations of Processing
Your personal information may be stored and processed in the United Kingdom or in another country where we or our service providers maintain servers and facilities, including the United States. Both of the providers named in section 4.1 are established in the United States.
We take steps, including through contracts, intended to ensure that your information continues to be protected wherever it is located, in a manner consistent with the standards of protection required under applicable law. These include the UK International Data Transfer Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses and, where applicable, the EUβUS Data Privacy Framework and its UK Extension. You may request further information about the safeguards that apply by contacting us.
8. Data Security
We implement technical and organisational measures intended to ensure a level of security appropriate to the risk to the personal information we process. These measures are aimed at ensuring the integrity, confidentiality and availability of personal information, and include serving the Service exclusively over HTTPS, keeping the volume of personal information we hold to a minimum, and limiting the number of people and systems able to access it. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
9. Children's Privacy
The Service is intended for tax, legal, accounting and investment professionals and for businesses. It is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.
10. Your Communications Preferences
Newsletter. You can unsubscribe at any time using the unsubscribe link in any mailing we send, or by contacting us. We will action the request without undue delay.
Cookies. Withdrawing your consent is as straightforward as giving it. Select Cookie settings in the footer of any page to reopen the consent banner and change your choice at any time. Withdrawal takes effect immediately and prevents any further analytics storage, although it does not undo processing that already took place lawfully. You can also block or delete cookies through your browser settings; doing so will not prevent you from reading the Service.
11. Accessing and Updating Your Information
You may have the right under applicable privacy and data protection laws to request, free of charge:
- access to your personal information, and a copy of it;
- rectification of inaccurate or incomplete personal information;
- erasure of your personal information;
- restriction of our processing of your personal information, or to object to our processing, including processing based on legitimate interests;
- portability of your personal information, in a structured, commonly used and machine-readable format; and/or
- withdrawal of your consent at any time, without affecting the lawfulness of processing carried out before withdrawal.
If you wish to exercise these rights, please submit your request in writing to hello@us-taxdesk.com. We will respond consistent with applicable laws, and in any event within one month. To protect your privacy and security, we may need to take reasonable steps to verify your identity before acting on a request. You will not be treated differently for exercising your rights.
12. Changes
We will update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated revision date. If we make any material change β for example, introducing a new email service provider β we will make that change clear rather than relying on you to notice it.

The three items stored in local storage remain on your device, are read only by the Service, and are not used to identify or track you across other websites.

It is separate from the editorial position that applies to what we publish: our articles and explainers are analysis and general information, and are not tax, legal or investment advice, nor a substitute for advice from your own accountant or attorney.
